Common white bud heather
White bud heather is one of the more interesting varieties of common heather, valued by amateur gardeners as well as professionals mainly for its decorative qualities and exceptionally long period of attractiveness. A characteristic feature of this plant is its flowers, which remain in the closed bud stage throughout the whole flowering period, thanks to this they keep their charm for several weeks. This heather delights gardeners with its snow-white flowers, which beautifully contrast with the dark green foliage. With its delicate and subtle colour, the plant brings peace, purity and elegance to the garden arrangement. It creates a unique accent among classic flower beds, however it will also work well in arrangements full of colours.
Characteristics of heather
White bud heather is a small shrub that usually grows to about 25-40 cm in height and the same width. This plant has a compact and cushion-like habit, thanks to which it is ideal for group plantings and on the edges of flower beds. Its leaves are small and most importantly evergreen - they keep their decorative charm even in the winter months, thanks to which the heather looks attractive also outside the flowering period. Snow-white flowers appear on the plant most often at the end of summer and decorate the garden until November (depending on weather conditions, the effect may remain even longer). The flowers are extremely resistant to unfavourable weather conditions such as wind or heavy rain.
What requirements does common white heather have?
Heather seedlings are an excellent choice for beginner gardeners, thanks to their low requirements. Only a few key rules should be followed. Above all, you should take care of the right soil, and most importantly its reaction - it should be acidic. The soil should also be light, permeable and when growing in pots you should not forget about proper drainage. To achieve the best effect during flowering, it is recommended to plant heather in a sunny position.
The correct planting stage does not end our care for heather, because it also requires uncomplicated care. Watering, pruning and wintering - care that must not be forgotten.
- Watering - heather does not tolerate dry or overwatered soil, therefore regular watering of the plant is recommended.
- Pruning - in spring at the turn of March and April, last year's shoots should be cut (most often by 1/3 of their length) - the treatment will stimulate the plant to branch.
- Wintering - although heather is frost-resistant, it is worth gently supporting it by mulching the soil with bark or needles, plants in pots should be covered with fabric or moved to a sheltered place.
