Product Description

Common red bud heather - a fiery accent in the garden

Red heather with bud flowers is an extremely attractive variety of common heather, which stands out with the deep red colour of its flowers and a very long decorative period. The plant owes its long flowering period to flowers that never open fully, remaining in the form of buds all the time, keeping their intense colour for many weeks. Dark red buds beautifully contrast with small, evergreen leaves. Heather attracts the attention of every garden guest and brings a distinctive and warm accent to the garden space. It creates consistent arrangements with autumn weather, other heathers and colourful plants.

Appearance and habit of the plant

Red heather is a densely leafed shrub growing to a height of 25-40 cm and a similar width. Thanks to its form, it is suitable for planting both directly in the garden as well as in pots or balcony boxes. The leaves of the plant have an intense green colour, which does not lose its charm even on winter days, because common heather is an evergreen plant. It flowers with densely placed buds from August until November (in favourable conditions the flowers may disappear even later). Heather, thanks to its evergreen leaves and long flowering period, remains a decoration of the garden even when other plants begin to lose their summer shine.

Requirements and care

Red bud heather is not a plant that requires complicated care and experience. However, it is worth remembering that following a few simple steps will help to achieve the best flowering and allow you to enjoy the plant for many years. The key to success is meeting a few basic conditions:

  • Position - heather seedlings grow best in full sun, where the colour of the buds will be the most intense. Heather can also be planted in partial shade, however a less distinctive flower colour should be expected.
  • Soil - above all it should be acidic (pH 3.5-5.5). It is also worth making sure that it is light, permeable and rich in humus. In pots, good drainage should be provided for the plants, which will help prevent rotting of the root system.
  • Watering - heather, especially young seedlings, should be watered regularly, checking the moisture of the soil (it should be neither too wet nor too dry).
  • Pruning - in spring, at the turn of March and April, heather seedlings should be cut by 1/3 of the length of their shoots - thanks to this the shrub will become denser and flower abundantly.
  • Wintering - red heather is frost-resistant, however it is worth taking care of young seedlings, which can be gently protected for the colder period.

Red heather - for small and large gardens

Common bud heather is an extremely decorative and universal plant that has many uses. It will work very well as the main point on a balcony or as an addition to autumn arrangements. It is most often found in flower beds, heather gardens or autumn pot arrangements. It is an excellent choice for people looking for a plant that is easy to grow and will bring an interesting and attractive accent to the garden. Without a doubt, red heather attracts all eyes with its deep, intense colour of the buds.
