Common bud heather – a pink accent in the garden
Common bud heather with pink colouring is a unique variety combining the traditional charm of heather plants with modern durability and resistance. Bud varieties stand out from classic heathers because their flowers do not open but remain in the form of buds. This feature makes them extremely resistant to unfavourable weather conditions, typical of autumn weather. They do not wilt or lose their colour even despite strong winds or heavy rain. This makes pink heather an ideal plant for autumn arrangements and group plantings in the garden. It combines very well with other varieties of bud heathers and grasses. It brings an intense colour accent to the garden.
Plant habit and appearance
The pink heather variety grows to about 25-35 cm in height, reaching a similar width. Its compact habit allows both single and group plantings. The shoots are stiff and densely covered with leaves, covered with intensely pink buds. Colourful flower clusters decorate the plant from August until late autumn. Outside the season, the plant remains evergreen, thanks to its evergreen leaves, which are needle-like, slightly shiny and intensely green. Heather seedlings can be planted both directly in the garden and in pots or balcony boxes.
Growing conditions
- Position - the plant grows best in sunny and airy places. It can also grow in partial shade, however its colour may lose its intensity.
- Soil - its acidic reaction is of key importance here, which should be between 3.5 and 5.5 pH. It is also worth making sure that it is light and permeable. You can use ready-made soil for heather plants or your own mixture of peat, sand and garden soil.
- Growing in pots - it should not differ from traditional growing. However, you should remember about proper drainage, which will ensure the outflow of excess water. A layer of expanded clay or drainage holes will be helpful.
Care of pink heather
The intense colour of the heather may wrongly suggest that its care is complicated. The truth is that every gardener can manage it. You should remember about regular watering and annual pruning of the plant. Bud heather needs slightly moist soil, so it is important to check it, especially with young seedlings. All heathers require annual spring pruning - 1/3 of the length of the shoots should be cut. This will allow the plant to produce new, strong shoots - as a result, the plant will additionally become denser.
Heather seedlings are frost-resistant plants, therefore they do not require special preparation for winter days. However, it is worth supporting young seedlings by mulching the soil or covering the plants. When growing in pots, you can additionally wrap the pots, protecting the root system from freezing.
