Product Description
Calocephalus Silver Wire Plant - silvery Calocephalus brownii plant
Calocephalus, also known as the silver wire plant, is an exceptionally decorative plant distinguished by its original appearance and intense silvery colour. Its thin, strongly branched shoots resemble tangled wires, giving the plant a modern appearance and making it eye-catching throughout the season. It perfectly brightens autumn arrangements when many other plants begin to lose their summer splendour.
The silvery shoots of calocephalus contrast beautifully with heathers, ornamental grasses and plants with intensely coloured flowers. The wire plant can be grown both in pots on balconies and terraces and in garden beds. Its unusual form means that even a small plant becomes an exceptional element of any arrangement.
Characteristics of calocephalus
The silver wire plant has a compact, spherical habit and numerous thin shoots covered with a silvery coating. The shoots branch intensively, creating a dense clump resembling a silver cloud. The plant usually grows to approximately 20-40 cm in height and a similar width.
The greatest decoration of calocephalus is not its flowers, but its unusual silvery-white shoots and small leaves. Thanks to its light colouring, the plant retains its decorative appearance even on cloudy autumn days. Its stiff branches tolerate wind and temporary drops in temperature well, but the wire plant is not fully resistant to severe frost.
An original plant that is easy to grow
Calocephalus does not require complicated care, so it can also be grown by beginner plant lovers. The most important thing is to provide it with plenty of light and a light, well-drained substrate. Under suitable conditions, it quickly forms a dense and attractive clump.
Most important cultivation rules
- Position - it should be primarily sunny and warm. A large amount of light influences the intensity of the silvery colour and allows the plant to maintain a compact habit.
- Soil - the substrate should be light, well-drained and moderately fertile. Calocephalus does not tolerate heavy and constantly wet soil well. When grown in pots, drainage holes and a drainage layer should be provided.
- Watering - the plant should be watered moderately, allowing the substrate to dry slightly between waterings. The wire plant copes much better with short-term drying out than with standing water, which can lead to root rot.
- Fertilising - calocephalus does not need intensive fertilising. During the growing period, it can be fed with a small dose of fertiliser for ornamental plants. Too many nutrients may cause excessive elongation of the shoots.
- Overwintering - the wire plant tolerates light and short-term frosts, but it is not resistant to severe frost. In Polish conditions it is most often grown as a seasonal plant. You can try to overwinter it in a bright, cool room protected from frost, reducing watering during this time.
Will calocephalus work in every garden?
Silver calocephalus is a versatile plant that suits both modern and more natural arrangements. It is perfect as a decoration for balconies, terraces, window sills and house entrances. It can be planted individually, but looks particularly attractive in arrangements with other plants.
The silvery shoots combine beautifully with purple, pink and white heathers, chrysanthemums, ornamental cabbage and grasses. The wire plant is often used in autumn pot arrangements because it brightens the composition and gives it lightness. It is an exceptional plant for people looking for a durable, elegant and unusual decoration.
