Product Description

Variety description

Common Heather 'Aurica' (Calluna vulgaris 'Aurica') is a unique, eye-catching bud-blooming variety that delights with its unusual sunny colouring and exceptional durability. It is an ideal choice for anyone looking for a plant that can brighten up a garden or balcony with light, contrasting colours.

Main plant characteristics

  • Leaves: Small, densely arranged leaves have an intense golden-yellow, almost lime colour that lasts throughout the season. In winter, the leaves may take on a slightly coppery or warm amber shade, making the shrub decorative all year round.
  • Flowers: Bud-blooming variety - the flower buds never fully open. Thanks to this, the flowers do not fade, do not fall and are exceptionally resistant to rain and frost. They are small, pure white and densely arranged on the shoots.
  • Flowering: Exceptionally long and abundant - it lasts from August until late autumn.
  • Habit: Compact, cushion-shaped and slightly upright. The plant usually reaches approximately 25-30 cm in height and a similar width.

Requirements and care

  • Position: Definitely sunny. The more sun, the more intense and distinctive the golden colouring of the leaves will be.
  • Soil: Requires acidic soil (pH 3.5-4.5), well-drained, humus-rich and moderately moist. It does not tolerate standing water.
  • Pruning: It should be pruned every year in spring (March/April), removing dried flower heads just below the point from which the buds grew. This will help the plant maintain a dense habit and flower abundantly.
  • Frost resistance: The variety is fully frost-resistant. In colder regions or during snowless winters, it is worth covering it with conifer branches.

Use in the garden

Heather 'Aurica' looks fantastic in traditional heather gardens, where its light leaves create an excellent contrast with green and darker varieties. It works very well in rock gardens, flower beds and as a ground cover plant. It is also an ideal choice for arrangements in pots and balcony boxes, combining beautifully with ornamental grasses or miniature conifers.
