Opinions from our customers

Strawberries offer an abundance of soft and very sweet fruits, which are considered some of the most attractive crops grown under European conditions. The drawback of these plants is their short fruiting period, which encouraged breeders to search for varieties that would extend the harvest time. As a result, frigo strawberries were developed, now also used in amateur cultivation.

What are frigo strawberries?

Frigo strawberry plants are standard strawberry varieties that differ in their production technology. Frigo strawberry plants are lifted in late autumn, immediately after the fruiting period ends. Growers then sort the plants into grades, clean them of old leaves and protect them against grey mould. The best plants, once sorted, are placed in cold storage where they remain for the winter until spring. After planting in the ground, frigo plants grow very quickly and the first fruits appear after about 3–6 weeks. This is why frigo strawberries are so popular among both small and large growers.

Frigo strawberries are plants obtained from specially prepared and stored seedlings. The aim of breeders was to increase the number of annual harvests or adjust their timing to market demand. It quickly turned out that allotment holders and gardeners appreciate them as well, and frigo strawberries have become a common feature in home gardens. They can also be found on terraces and even balconies.

Advantages of frigo strawberries

Unlike traditional varieties, frigo strawberries can be harvested almost throughout the entire season. The secret of their popularity lies in the method of storing the plants.

Frigo strawberry plants are kept in strictly controlled conditions. Soil and air moisture levels are constantly monitored, as well as temperature, which must remain low enough to prevent the start of an uncontrolled vegetative period.

Growing frigo strawberries is relatively easy and very rewarding. One advantage of this method is the lack of need to lift green plants (traditional strawberries) in spring and replant them quickly to prevent drying. The grower must also protect green plants for winter and ensure proper watering.

In the case of frigo strawberry plants, none of these issues occur. Cultivation comes down to planting the plant at the right time. In return, you receive delicious fruits. In this context, frigo strawberry varieties available in our shop or on various platforms are highly recommended.

How to store frigo strawberry plants?

Frigo strawberry plants are obtained in late autumn. Since they are planted from spring of the following year, they must survive the winter in cool, dark rooms. The optimal storage temperature is 2.0°C. People without access to a suitable cold room should purchase frigo plants shortly before planting. Storing the plants in a refrigerator or a cool cellar at 3–5°C is allowed, but not for longer than seven days.

Frigo strawberry plants – when to plant?

Frigo strawberries can be planted as early as March, or even at the end of February if the weather is favourable. The key to successful cultivation is proper sunlight and ambient temperature. When planted twice or three times during the year, the grower can obtain two or three harvest cycles.

Frigo strawberries – cultivation

Frigo strawberry plants are cultivated the same way as any other strawberries. Here are a few basic guidelines.

  1. Select the right location: Frigo strawberries need a sunny, wind-protected spot. Ensure the soil is well-drained and moist, with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5.
  2. Prepare the soil: Before planting, enrich the soil with manure or compost and thoroughly remove weeds.
  3. Planting: Frigo strawberry plants should be planted at a depth of 10–15 cm, keeping a distance of 30–40 cm between plants and 60–70 cm between rows.
  4. Watering: Water frigo strawberries regularly, especially during drought. Keep the soil moist but not waterlogged to avoid diseases.
  5. Fertilising: During the growing season, apply a potassium-rich fertiliser every 3–4 weeks.
  6. Maintenance: Remove weeds, especially around the plants, to prevent competition for water and nutrients.
  7. Harvest: Pick ripe strawberries when they reach their full colour. Do not wait too long, as strawberries may rot.

Can different strawberry varieties be planted next to each other?

Many experiences show that this cultivation method brings very good results. Planting different strawberry varieties alternately improves pollination efficiency without the risk of crossbreeding between varieties.

Frigo strawberry plants – price

Sales offers for strawberry plants are prepared every year starting from November. Their price depends on the plant grade and the number of plants included in the sets. Frigo strawberries are available on various platforms from as little as €4, and in our shop you will find them cheaper. They are sold in packs of ten.

How often should strawberries be replaced?

To ensure the best harvests, strawberries should be replaced every 3 to 4 years. After this time, the fruits become smaller and less abundant. Of course, the durability and productivity of the crop depend on several factors.

  • The following factors are taken into account:
  • Soil conditions
  • Variety
  • Degree of weed infestation

Which strawberry varieties are best for amateur cultivation?

Strawberries are relatively easy and rewarding to grow. Their varieties differ in harvest times, flavour, and the number and size of fruits. There are many strawberry varieties suitable for amateur growing. The final choice depends on several factors, such as climate, soil conditions and flavour preferences.

The most popular strawberries for amateur cultivation include:

  • Elsanta: A popular variety with a strong flavour and aroma, well-suited for transport and storage.
  • Mieze Schindler: This variety has a strong flavour and aroma, but requires proper care to fully reveal its potential.
  • Rumba
  • Honeoye
  • Polka: A high-yielding variety with an intense flavour that performs well in various climates.
  • Kent
  • Albion: A variety with a long fruiting period and good disease resistance.

The choice of the best strawberry variety depends on individual needs. In our shop, all varieties are suitable for cultivation in our climate and may be the perfect choice for you.

Frigo strawberry grades

The criterion for classifying frigo strawberry plants is the diameter of the plant crown. The crown diameter indicates the expected yield – the larger the plant, the richer the fruiting in the year of planting.

  • Class B – 7 to 10 mm
  • Class A – 10 to 15 mm
  • Class A+ – 15 to 20 mm
  • Class A++ – above 20 mm

Due to their large crown diameter, A++ frigo strawberry plants are the most popular among amateur growers.

Frigo strawberries – reviews

Most reviews reflect the high interest of amateur growers in frigo strawberries. This is due to their ease of cultivation and frequent harvests.

Unfortunately, producing frigo plants at home is practically impossible. Growers must obtain them from garden centres or directly from producers.
